Nature reserve near Cartagena, that provides visitors with the opportunity to explore a tropical dry forest.
Matute Birding Nature Reserve is a biodiversity sanctuary committed to the conservation of the tropical dry forest. Matute was a cattle ranch 45 years ago but was then transformed to a reserve for the conservation of the tropical dry forest. This ecosystem is one of the most threatened in Colombia. Thanks to a reforestation process, wildlife returned. The reserve is now home to over 250 bird species.
Some highlights include streams with crystal-clear waters, centennial trees, and unique birds adapted to this environment, as well as the possibility of observing amphibians such as the Dendrobates truncatus frog. Furthermore, the presence of sloths and howler monkeys makes this experience special, offering visitors the chance to connect with nature and enjoy the richness of local biodiversity.
Matute Birding Nature Reserve is located an hour south of Cartagena, in Turbaco. The site can be accesed via public transport or by private transportation. Press P on the map for directions.
