The Omala plateau is the center of viticultural production in Cephalonia. A mosaic of vineyards, olive groves, meadows, and maquis forest.
The Omala plateau is situated amidst tall mountains (Aenos and Roudi) and numerous hills, exhibiting a wide variety of ecotopes, cultivated (vineyards, olive groves, meadows) and natural (maquis and phrygana). Avian fauna is typical of farmed areas (e.g., Cirl Bunting, Eurasian Hoopoe) and Mediterranean rocky scrub ( Rock Partridge). Common Buzzard continuously circle overhead.
The Omala plateau is easily reached by car from everywhere in Cephalonia. It's about 20 minutes from the capital Argostoli. If you would rather explore the farmland, leave the car at the villages of Fragata or Valsamata, and walk. Or, drive on the surrounding hills. There are many dirt roads criss-crossing the landscape that require an SUV.
