Seasonal wetland located just outside the town of Paralimni. Over 180 bird species have been recorded here.
Paralimni Lake is a natural, seasonal wetland, one of very few such wetlands left in Cyprus. Even though it is relatively small in size, at around 350 hectares, Paralimni Lake is home to an array of unique wildlife. The area worth visiting mostly before May since the lake starts to get dry. There are a lot of spots from where you can get a close look.
The VIP of the place are the Greater Flamingo. You can also find Little Grebe, Eurasian Coot, Eurasian Moorhen, European Bee-eater, Western Marsh Harrier, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Little Tern, Spur-winged Lapwing, Squacco Heron and many more. The most significant report is the one made by Andy Rollie in 2023 , when a Diederic Cuckoo made its 2nd record for Cyprus. It has also to be mentioned that the place is a habitat for the rare endemic sub-species of Grass Snake, Natrix natrix cypriaca.
Paralimni Lake is located in the Famagusta District of eastern Cyprus, just outside the town of Paralimni. If you want to visit the place and make proper observations you will need three days of walking around without harassing the widlife. There is a parking behind Super Action store and Lidl supermarket. Press P on the map for directions. Its the nearest you can get to the Greater Flamingo. You can also drive with your car from the Super Action side, since there is a small dusty road that goes parallel to the lake.
There is a bird hide to be build , still under discussion from the local municipality.
